Core services and specialty programs that enrich academic experiences for College of Letters & Science students, from the moment they apply to UW–Madison through to graduation (and beyond).
Led by Associate Dean Cal Bergman, L&S Student Academic Affairs is a hub for advocacy on behalf of our students, especially their learning, personal growth, and pursuit of a well-rounded, flexible, and meaningful college degree. We collaborate closely with UW–Madison’s Office of Admissions and Recruitment to help prospective students learn about the opportunities in L&S, and create high-quality orientation and advising programs for those worthy of being a Badger. We shape policy, encourage improvements, and lead by getting good things done for our students and the campus community around them.
Academic Advising Services
Advisors help students discover courses, programs, and campus services. Starting the summer before their first semester, most L&S students will have an advisor from Academic Advising Services. When students declare a major, their advisor will be in that major’s department.
Center for Academic Excellence
The Center for Academic Excellence works with under-represented, first-generation, and low-income students in promoting the values of liberal arts education.
Undergraduate Academic Deans’ Services
Academic deans provide essential guidance on the policies and components of L&S degree programs. Through this office, students get support on issues related to these components, like changing courses or maintaining sufficient academic progress.
This team coordinates scholarships offered by the College. L&S students may be eligible for other scholarships, fellowships, and grants in specific UW–Madison majors and programs.
Undergraduate Research Scholars Program
Open to about 200 first- and second-year students, this year-long program matches them with a professor or graduate student in an ongoing research project to learn about interdisciplinary discovery and creativity.
Academic Information Management
The College’s data analysis and management center, providing academic departments and college leadership with insights for program planning, curriculum development, and more.
